I attended Haris Kakarouhas’ Insight workshop in 2017. I’d happened to see some photographs of his and had fallen in love with them. I became almost obsessed with hearing the man who had taken those wonderful pictures talk about the process of photography. I wanted to find out more about how he takes photographs and, of course, to hear what he had to say about my own work. I first encountered Haris Kakarouhas through his photographs at an exhibition of his work. It was a set of photographs that was more than a project comprising photo stories, forms and content. I felt that something was happening there without being able to explain it. But with the passage of time, as things turned out, I would have the chance to discover everything that was inexplicable. It is not easy to describe Haris Kakarouhas’ photography workshop. I recently read a book by the traveller Henri Michaux, in which one phrase jumped out at me: “It is as if Westerners have a seed in their eye, bigger or smaller depending on the person. This is a workshop about self-knowledge before it is about photography. To anyone who wants it to, it will reveal everything that is necessary for us to learn what we have inside us.
